Modernization of the automated cell for chamfering and rolling tubes

Project Objective

The project aimed to modernize an automated cell for chamfering and rolling heat exchanger tubes. The main objective was to increase the efficiency and flexibility of the existing line at minimal cost to allow the integration of future product designs.

General Description

Challenges included:

  • Reconfiguring the low-budget line;
  • Design a table to reduce working time;
  • Developing fully automated equipment in a context where only semi-automated solutions existed.

Solutions included:

  • Modernization of existing equipment;
  • Fully automate the process with a robot;
  • Improving safety to obtain the E.C. certificate.

Advantages, Features, and Challenges

The project involved collaboration between mechanical engineering, automation and simulation teams. FEA analyses were essential for equipment validation and optimization.

Key innovations:

  • Quick and automated disconnection system;
  • Probe for part position detection;
  • Rotary table with translation, which significantly reduced working time;
  • Complete automation of chamfering equipment.

Conclusion

After tests and simulations, the line was optimized for safety and performance. The rotary table and automated equipment were validated and successfully commissioned. Solutions for smoke evacuation and tool handling by the robot were integrated. The result: a more efficient process with reduced manual intervention.
